The problem with being right all the time is that I tend not to listen
Or learn
And it’s becoming clearer to me that this life force that I’m part of is all about expansion and growth. It’s just what it does. So it seems that trying to get in the way of that or even control it, based on some idea that I know best is not just egotistical, it’s lunacy.
So I’m learning to love being wrong
Which actually makes things a lot easier because I’m so damn good at it
Much easier than trying to fix reality to make me look right anyway.
When my wife and I first got together we lived in Barcelona, Spain for a little over a year.
I thought I’d pick up Spanish in weeks. I was wrong about that. I thought I’d be welcomed with open arms by a buzzing job market just because I had a little English teaching certificate. Wrong again.
I thought just being me would ensure a smooth transition into cohabitation and wedlock. Nope. That took work too.
And thank goodness - I was totally oblivious and entitled, living in a bubble of my own conditioning and semi-conscious choices.
Later, I thought cruising in to my father’s business would set me up for life. I was wrong about that.
I thought I needed a new job. Wrong.
I thought there was no decent work for freelance translators. I was wrong and this skill has provided for our family for many years.
I thought I couldn’t be a successful trader because I’m not a “numbers” person. Wrong.
I thought I couldn’t be a coach because no one would want to hire me. Wrong, wrong, wrong.
So now I’m seeing that being wrong is a superpower.
I’m always wrong about something. Now different types of questions come to mind.
What am I wrong about now?
What assumptions am I not questioning?
When I realise that all my growth and success have forced me to reevaluate my perspective to some degree, I see the value of being wrong.
Being right is overrated. And totally delusional.
Because a greater truth will always emerge, if I’m willing to let go of the need to be right - and let it in.
So what do you think?
Am I right or am I right? 🙃
